Audi A5 // Pure Imagination

For the Audi A5 "Pure Imagination" campaign—a project widely regarded as a visual landmark in automotive advertising—I was responsible for the creative development and execution of a pivotal third of the film. Specifically, I led the "Trail Lights" sequence, serving as the architect for everything from the initial visual development to the final craft and technical assembly.

My objective was to translate the abstract concept of an "AI dreaming" into a tangible, high-fidelity reality. Drawing inspiration from the "Light as Data" ethos, I developed the aesthetic of an illuminated Lidar World, utilizing ultra-dense point clouds to generate fluid, data-driven landscapes. The sequence required a sophisticated mastery of anamorphic lensing techniques within a CG environment—incorporating heavy bokeh fields, shallow depth-of-field, and rack focusing—to imbue the digital environment with a soulful, organic quality.

By bridging the gap between cold data and human emotion, I helped create a dreamscape that felt both cutting-edge and approachable. The "Trail Lights" sequence was not only a technical triumph in seamless 3D set extension and FX simulation, but it also established a specific visual language that remains a gold standard and a primary reference point for contemporary motion design and VFX work today.
The film’s high production value and innovative concept did not go unnoticed by the industry. It was awarded a Bronze for Best VFX at the Creative Circle Awards and took home Silver for Television Commercial of the Year at the Shots Awards. It was widely praised for its "balletic" precision, ultimately proving that Audi’s entry-level models possess the same technological DNA and "attitude" as its flagship vehicles.
The success of the piece relied on a seamless integration of world-class Art Direction and digital world-building. I directed the team through meticulous research on high-altitude dynamics and atmospheric perspective to ensure the protagonist’s ascent felt truly epic. From managing the creation of intricate Digital Matte Paintings to supervising massive 3D panoramas and seamless set extensions, my focus was on achieving a level of craftsmanship that transcended the limits of the physical set. This holistic creative leadership was recognized on the world’s most prestigious stages, most notably securing a Cannes Bronze Lion for Production Design/Art Direction. The project’s visual excellence also garnered widespread international acclaim, earning top honors at the Clio Awards, D&AD, The One Show, and the Berlin Commercial Festival, cementing its place as a benchmark for technical and creative innovation in the industry.
